Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Primary School
The Pirates! (Peers Interested in Responsible Action Towards Environmental Sustainability)
We will hold a whole school GREEN day whereby children's thinking and behaviour will be challenged in contributing to make our environment a greener, more sustainable one. Activities include setting up a cafe nursery using disposable coffee cups; making a tadpole tank and insect hotels; investigating solar polar; exploring macro-invertebrates as bio-indicators of clean waterways; making mini worm farms; reusing plastic bottles creatively; designing an eco message on calico bags; and exploring and creating with natural materials (nature play.
We are going to set up a cafe nursery using disposable coffee cups and also design some eco messages to put on reusable cloth bags to promote less use of plastic bags. We are also going to reuse empty yogurt tubs to make mini worm farms to take home and start feeding our organic scraps to them. We'll continue to bring nude food to school to reduce packaging and rubbish going to landfill.
We will all plant a seed in our disposable coffee cups and once it has grown, we will replant the seedlings in our veggie garden.
We are going to investigate solar power by constructing solar cars and boats and exploring how they work. We will also ensure all lights, air cons and interactive boards are switched off when we leave our rooms.
We're going to make a tadpole pond for our playground and also assess the water quality of our local creek by investigating macro-invertebrates. We're going to make insect hotels to encourage pollinators to our gardens and we're going t0 be creative using natural resources in our environment through nature play.
