Our Story So Far…

Create instructional posters to present to all classes to encourage everyone in the school to use our lunchtime recycling bins and classroom recycling bins correctly.

In Year 4 at St Benedict's Yeppoon, we follow St Benedict's rule of "Living" by caring for all living things including people, plants and animals. As part of this we run our school's lunchtime recycling bins by recycling things such as tin cans, poppers, plastic containers and clean cardboard and paper. We also collect fruit and vegetable scraps to put into our worm farm and compost bin. Each week we also do weeding, rubbish pick-up and collect clean paper and cardboard recycling from the classrooms and office. Last term we used recycled milk bottles as flower pots to make the word "LIVING" in the garden near our classroom. This year we also have been learning about sustainability and have conducted lunchtime rubbish surveys and created posters to encourage people to reduce, reuse, refuse, recycle and compost (4RC). We have noticed that many students at our school are not recycling all of the rubbish they could and they are not using the yellow recycling bins properly. We decided that our class needs to encourage all people at St Benedict's to recycle properly by creating instructional posters to put on the recycling bins and into classrooms. We will then present these posters to each class explaining how to recycle properly. In this way we are hoping to encourage everyone to look after the environment and all living things just like we do.
