Hillcrest Christian College
The Not So Secret Gardeners
We are creating a special garden for outdoor learning and quiet time.
This term we will learn how to set up raised garden beds where we will use and reuse natural waste materials. We will aim to reduce the amount of plastic in our packed lunches and spread the word throughout our Junior Learning Community. The amount of time it takes for waste products to disintegrate will be on display at the garden.
This term we are turning a virtually unused area of land into a productive area to be known as The Not So Secret Garden. The area has four raised garden beds ready to be filled and used.
The whole class look forward to the gardening sessions each week to enjoy nature, getting dirty and breathing in the fresh air. The added benefit is that we are saving electricity whilst outside.
Taking our learning outside to design, develop and maintain a Garden for biodiversity and experience to develop gardens to grow a variety of plants for different purposes. Interacting with nature has been beneficial for both the environment and the children. Setting up biomes indoors to create replica Australian habitats have aided our understanding of the interactions within natural systems.
Swapping a bottled or packaged drink each week for a reusable saves 8.32 CO2-e kg a year.
WE ARE CELEBRATING ENVIROWEEK
The Not So Secret Gardeners will be inviting the Junior Learning Community to visit their gardens, share the message to reduce waste and be given an invitation to create a community garden within the space.
