Our Story So Far…
Students planned and construct a permaculture structure on our school grounds. We collected money for individualized edging stones for our herb spiral. For registering in the local Spring Gardening Competition we won a starter kit from Bunnings. Parent involvement encouraged! There are 15 benefits of an Herb Spiral Design: You can grow more food in less space because of the vertical growing potential. Through a range of microclimates you can grow more variety of fresh, nutritious and aromatic herbs in better health because their needs of sun, shelter, shade and various moisture zones are met. You can build an herb spiral even on concrete and save money from harvesting fresh from the garden only as much as you need in a convenient height. A little garden right outside of your kitchen is a smart way to save time, energy and food miles. Water management is easy because no water is wasted, drainage is maximised when water loving plants are placed at the base. Drip irrigation can be integrated up the centre and along the planting ramp or a central sprinkler will avoid wasting water. Pest management is integrated because most fragrant herbs are useful as pest deterrents and flowering herbs also attract beneficial pollinating insects for companion planting. At the same time it is a beautiful garden feature that can be built on low cost using materials you have at hand to retain the soil. An herb spiral creates biodiversity and a habitat for beneficial creatures like lizards and frogs.
