Smart Start's Environmental Helpers
Our Story So Far…
We will be giving the children an insight into helping the environment by saving electricity, recycling and being green.
This week we focused on saving energy by turning our lights off and by having natural light in our rooms. We participate in Earth our on a daily basis. The weather has been so lovely, that Educators and children have been pegging our washing outside, instead of using our dryer. Children have also been nurturing our vegetable and herb gardens. We have been busy planting a variety of herbs such as coriander, mint, oregano and basil. Children have been maintaining our vegetable garden by using left over water from our sustainability buckets to water our gardens. Our older children have a clear understanding of recycling paper, cardboard and plastic. Each room at Smart Start has a recycling bin to allow children to take part in recycling and saving our trees. Group discussions have been happening in our rooms about reducing the waste of paper and water. We have also had story times with books about recycling, where rubbish goes and sustainable living. Following up from this experience, we have had positive feedback from families about sustainable living, vegetables and recycling. Overall this has been a positive experience at our centre, giving our younger generation more knowledge and power to promote a sustainable future.
