St Columba Anglican School
Enviro Kids @ SCAS
The whole school is getting involved in a range of Enviroweek actions.
We are learning all about recycling...especially the nasty plastics and how we can recycle them, whether soft or hard. We are already recycling our paper. However, we want to get better at recognising the plastics that we can recycle, especially those that we bring to school or get from the canteen. We also collect our fruit scraps from Fruit time and compost them and give some to our worms or chickens. Some of our children have and are participating in community run events like Clean Up Australia and Coastal Warriors Port Macquarie which helps to clean up our beautiful beaches. Yr1 are participating in the 'Youth Against Marine Debris Challenge' when they go out for their Geo/Enviro Field trip. They will collect rubbish and subsequent data for the Solitary Islands Marine Park survey. We are all thinking consciously how we can reduce our waste.
We have a small Vegie Patch and any child is able to come along and assist. Staff members run this as a Gardening Club. The children bring their gloves to share in the fun and learn about growing healthy, organic food. We share the food we harvest with our helpers. They take it home and send in photos of delectable creations they have made in the kitchen. We want to build this up into a bigger and better garden with many more children taking ownership in looking after it.
Lights off when no one is home. Turning unnecessary switches off. We have installed automatic timers on lights and airconditioners. We only turn them on when we need them. In winter, we close doors to keep the warmth in. In summer, the cool breeze drifts through our doors and open windows.
Children are encouraged to explore nature. We play lots of games to get dirty. In fact, after the rains we have so much mud that the children love building car tracks in it. We also like to be creative and use natural materials in our art works. We are also exploring being mindful in nature as well as taking some of our lessons outdoors. We are learning to appreciate the sight, sounds, smells and feel of nature and how it makes us feel.
We are going to make a concerted effort to reduce the waste that we create daily. We are going to take steps to improve our habits to reduce our environmental footprint. We are encouraging a model of 'Kids teaching kids' and hope that the kids take these messages home! We all need to take responsibility for Planet Earth. We only have one planet and the resources are not infinite.
WE ARE CELEBRATING ENVIROWEEK
We will actively ensure that our message reaches far and wide. Whether it is writing an article for our newsletter, posting on Facebook, getting published in the local newspaper, we will be seen! We may even publish our efforts in our yearly School magazine - being there for eternity. We also love to share what we learn with our peers and parents. If we can manage, we will make a little video exploring our journey.
