Our Story So Far…

Our Infants will assist in the planting and caring of a GUMBOOT garden for our Out door play area.

To begin establishing our GUMBOOT GARDEN Educators carefully scooped out potting mix and begun to fill the gumboots. The infants watched one as the soil filled the boots, reaching out to try and help. Educators then invited the infants to help, carefully guiding the Infants hand to scoop up the soil and pour into the boot. The infants reached out for the gardening tools, eager to participate. Educators talked to the infants about the herbs we were planting, and how we will need to water the plant each day to help them grow. The infants were encouraged to touch and smell the plants, developing their senses. We planted a variety of herbs in the gumboots. With plants in the gumboots and drainage holes in the bottom of the boot, we then attached them to the trellis in our outdoor area. The Infants play a big part in caring for our gumboot garden on a daily basis as they take turns to help pour water from the watering can to give the plants a drink. We look at and talk about the changes that are taking place such as plants growing and flowers blooming. We were lucky enough to see a butterfly fluttering around our flower which created lots of interest from the infants.
