Blacktown Girls High School
Waste Management Team
We will be ‘trashing’ and crunching the numbers to see just how big our everyday impact is.
A group of Year 9 students surveyed 5 Year 7 students, 9 Year 9 students and 4 Year 11 students. Most of the Year 7 students identified some different wastes and how to manage it. The Year 9 and 11 students had difficulty responding and were directed to manage their waste appropriately. Some Year 7 students decided to design and display a poster encouraging students to throw their waste in the bin. Other students decided to recycle familiar items, display them, so other students would be encourage to recycle as well.
We cleared away some weeds where we are developing an Eco Library. We mixed some of the organic material in with the soil that is in the garden. We noticed the improvement in soil condition after a couple of days. Establishing a garden provides; opportunity to work together as a group, a place for plants to thrive and a habitat for insects. During the week we had a colony of Bull Ants move in.
Australian households waste $1,226 a year on things they buy but never use.
WE ARE CELEBRATING ENVIROWEEK
We are displaying our work at our local library and council offices.
