Balaklava Primary School
Our environmental responsiblities of composting, worm farming, recycling, gardening and caring for our Mitchell's Hopping mice will be the focus during Enviroweek. We will also conduct a rubbish audit for five days and compile data charts and graphs to calculate our waste to landfill impact over a year.
DID WE ACHEIVE OUR PLANNED ACTIONS?
We did the Rubbish audit and will calculate our yearly impact upon landfill. We will put the data collected into tables to create graphs and predictions and to create discussions of our findings.
We planted seeds and spent lots of time in our gardens.
Our Wormy Squirmy fertilizer business began and we had a stall and sold some bottles. We bottled up heaps more to sell.
We watched lots of videos about Landfill, Methane gas, Plastics, Foam and e-waste.
Our understandings of the impact of waste and the need to re-use and recycle and to remove rubbish safely have increased a great deal.
We will be collecting our rubbish from packed foods or those purchased at school canteen and sorting it and recording the data to create graphs and tables to compile results This information will be used to collate estimates of expected waste produced in our class for rest of school year We will continue our existing recycling program and composting and worm farm to reduce landfill We will begin selling our worm fertilizer 'Wormy Squirmy' and use funds to purchase another compost bin to cope with ever increasing loads of organic matter
We will plant seeds for edibles in our two above ground planters which have existing crops. We will germinate seeds into seedlings to be planted in Spring. We will also plant more native bush tucker plants. We shall maintain trees planted on National Tree Day 2017 and 2016.
We sorted our separated our waste. More than 20 per cent of our waste was food that could have been eaten or composted. That’s the same as throwing out one in every five bags of groceries.
WE ARE CELEBRATING ENVIROWEEK
We will spend the majority of our learning time in our environmental education areas. We will record our activities and share with our school community.
